Welcome to the Solo Series!
Dungeon Masters want to play, too. The Solo Series is just what the name implies, a series of adventures played solo; one person (who acts as both player and Dungeon Master), one character. While this character is not specifically a member of the Not Bandits adventuring crew, it’s very likely that their paths will cross at some point. Stay tuned for the mishaps and misadventures of a single character in a very big world.
Can you play Dungeons & Dragons alone?
While at its core Dungeons & Dragons is a collaborative roleplaying and storytelling game, there are numerous tools that make it possible for a single person to successfully run sessions by themselves. This Solo Series will use a variety of tools to achieve results, including oracles and emulation, random tables, and lots of die rolls and creativity.
Some of the tools I’ll be experimenting with include:
Essentially, playing the Solo Series will be a lot like writing a fantasy novel, or creating a Choose Your Own Adventure story. However, I won’t be coming up with everything on my own; the tools will help guide the decisions I make and the outcomes of those decisions.
House Rules
Playing alone makes it easier to fudge some rolls, make things up that probably wouldn’t happen, or even keep someone alive who shouldn’t be. As such, I’ll be establishing some house rules for myself to follow as I play. This list will probably be added to and updated as the Solo Series progresses and I figure out new aspects of the game.
- Every roll counts, and there are no re-rolls (except when specified by other written rules).
- Death is permanent. If my lone player character dies and there are no relevant mechanics to revive them, they are dead and a new character must be created to continue the series.
- Use tools like oracles and emulators, but common sense and best judgment outweigh these results.
- Have fun. The whole purpose of the Solo Series is to create an experience for myself that I can’t have anywhere else. If anything is ever not fun for whatever reason, it’s got no place in the Solo Series.
This is Session 0 of the Solo Series, where you will meet Roderic, the Tiefling Circle of Spirits bard who will be our first protagonist of the series. Origins and Upbringing Roderic was born in Daggerford, a small but bustling town nestled along the Trade Way between Waterdeep and Baldur’s…
